The city of Cajamarca has a great historical importance because Atahualpa, the last Inca, was caught there. The Spanish victory marked the end of the Inca Empire and the beginning of the Spanish colony in Peru and witness to this is the Rescue Room where the last Inca was taken prisoner. In addition, the surroundings of Cajamarca offer different archaeological and natural places to visitors. Chachapoyas was the development region of the powerful kingdom of Chachapoyas. Its legacies include the Kuelap Fortress in the Utcubamba river valley as well as other archaeological centers. The fortress has 20 m high walls and more than 500 circular dwellings inside.
